Google contact sync issues

In 10.5.4, the mac program addressbook.app allowed google contact sync. Of course I was very happy, and started the process. The problem started when the inevitable duplicates came up. I forgot what I said, but the next thing I know is that I had duplicates. I decided to delete (backup and remove) the address book contacts. I tried to resync, and it failed. I had a major problem. My google contacts also became corrupt. I decided that mac/google syncing is not worth it. What I had to do is rebuild google from my outlook list. It took a day or two

On the iphone itunes preferences page, I get an option to sync with google. I'm afraid because I don't trust CSV. I don't know how the iphone will match fields with google, then google with outlook.
Does anybody have any advice as to how it syncs with outlook or addressbook.app? I don't care where my official syncing program, as long as google doesn't get corrupted. I much rather an outlook solution because my PC is my main machine.
